Accompaniment
Experience and Training
I have been playing the piano since the age of 7. I have formal training in classical piano as well as jazz piano. I have experience playing in numerous rock and jazz bands. Also, I have a degree from the University of Michigan in Musical Theatre Performance. So, I am familiar and proficient with most musical theatre repertoire, both classic and contemporary. I have played New York auditions for top casting offices. Also, I accompany singers at New York auditions. I have played for concerts, recordings, recitals, and cabarets in New York City. Also, I have worked as a Music Director for Equity shows both in New York City and regionally. Every Associate on the New York Vocal Coaching staff is also very skilled on the piano and many have had music directing experience as well.
Style and Sensitivity
Since I have trained as a singer and actor myself, I feel that I have sensitivity with my playing that is different from many players. Having been in the shoes of my singers, I can help support them, breathe with them, and provide complimentary dynamics. I understand that an accompanist's job is to make the singer look and sound fantastic. I am flexible with my playing to make sure that this happens. It's never about me, it's always about you or about us.
Sight Reading
I can sight read almost anything you put in front of me. If the song is inordinately difficult, I am always willing to take a look at the music before our session to make sure that I can nail it for you. Just let me know before our session and I should be able to play your music for you right when you arrive for your coaching.
Transposing, Reading Charts, Finale
I can transpose music that you bring me and help you to find the best key for your vocal range. I can also read chords, charts, and jazz charts. I don’t personally work with the Finale computer program and therefore do not write out transpositions or transcriptions for clients. But, our staff does work with colleagues who specialize in Finale, transcription, and transposition. Together, we can always find the resources to help you prepare your music thoroughly.
